Within the past year I got into board games and over this year I have acquired a decent collection and have played a variety of games in terms of themes and difficulty. I'm pretty hooked! When Azul won the Spiel des Jahres in 2018 I "had" to buy it. I wanted to get in on a hot new game to understand why it's well revered. Since buying it I've played about 12 games, mostly 2 players, but a few 4 player games and it's a blast. The game revolves around picking up tiles and placing them to score points. The game starts off slowly without much tension, but as your board fills up the game becomes pretty cutthroat as you try to force your opponent to take tiles that will cause them to lose points while mitigating the point loss on your own board. It requires thinking ahead and critical thinking. It's a fantastic board game that takes 1 round to teach, and many rounds to develop a strategy.

I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend. We've only played it a few times so far with one of our other friends, but we all really enjoy it so far and see it as a great addition to the board games we love to play on a regular basis. The tiles are really gorgeous, well designed, and feel nice to place around the board and on the table. Games are also short enough that it helps you pick it up quickly and try out different approaches/strategies relatively quickly. I highly recommend it, I'm honestly thinking of buying myself a copy too!

Super fun game, multiple ways to play, good w/ 2 ppl or party game. I had never heard if it before my gf told me about it and now hooked playin all the time. Better than staring at our phones

Easy to learn, fun to play! I played this at a GameCon I went to. One of my friends bought it, and I bought it as a gift for one of my friends. The board and tiles are colorful - which one of my friends really liked about it. I think this could be played by a wide age range; any kid (probably over 10) all the way up to adults. Or adults who still enjoy being a kid. :)

I own three copies of this game at home, and all of them get used. I've hosted mini-tournaments with friends, and I play it online all the time. I also compete in the World Series of Boardgaming in Las Vegas every year, and Azul is always one of my four category picks. It's that consistent. It looks peaceful, but it's not. The tiles are beautiful, the rules are simple, and the game is quietly competitive. You'll think you're just arranging patterns until someone takes the exact tiles you needed. Setup is fast, and most games finish in under twenty minutes. Easy to learn, quick to play, and always engaging.

I got this game for quality time for my s/o and I, for nights in. I was getting tired of movie nights and wanted to try something new. We absolutely love this game, he isn't even that into board games and raves about it. It's even become a favorite when we have night in with couple friends. Buy it!

About Azul

Azul launched in 2017 as a modern abstract strategy game built around a simple but distinctive idea: transforming the beauty of traditional Portuguese azulejos into a tactile, competitive tabletop experience. Designed by renowned German game designer Michael Kiesling and published by Plan B Games, Azul combined elegant rules with high-quality components - distinctive resin tiles, minimalist player boards, and an intuitive drafting system that quickly became central to its identity.

The design philosophy was clear from the start: accessibility without sacrificing depth. A game learned in minutes, played in under an hour, and enjoyed equally by families, casual players, and experienced strategy gamers.

The theme draws directly from history. When King Manuel I of Portugal visited the Alhambra palace in southern Spain, the stunning Moorish decorative tiles left such an impression that he commissioned similar works for the Royal Palace of Evora. This cultural moment provided a visual and thematic foundation rather than a narrative overlay - allowing the gameplay to remain clean, abstract, and timeless.

Critical Acclaim

Critical and public reception was immediate and sustained. Azul received the 2018 Spiel des Jahres - board gaming's highest honour - alongside victories at the Origins Awards, As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année, and Mensa Select certification. This recognition helped Azul reach audiences far beyond hobbyist circles, establishing it as a modern classic.

The Azul Series

Success prompted expansion into a full series. Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra arrived in late 2018, followed by Azul: Summer Pavilion in 2019, Azul: Queen's Garden in 2022, and the two-player focused Azul Duel in 2025. The Crystal Mosaic and Glazed Pavilion expansions, along with the limited edition Master Chocolatier reskin, further broadened the collection. Each release maintained the core principles that defined the original: clarity, elegance, and meaningful decision-making.

Today, Azul stands as a benchmark in contemporary board game design - proof that strong visual identity, refined mechanics, and respect for the player's time can coexist, and that abstract games can achieve both critical acclaim and mainstream popularity.
